How many types of rescue device for elevator are there?

1. Automatic rescue function:

The automatic rescue function will not work if the safety devices or safety circuits of the elevator are activated.

The automatic rescue function not only works when the elevator loses power but also when the power is cut off due to other impacts in the engine room

2. Operation function using backup power source (generator):

The operation function using backup power source will be activated when the power goes out. At that time the elevator will use backup power source, bring the cabin to the nearest floor and open the door for users to exit. The elevator will resume normal operation when power is restored. It is possible to select one or more elevators in the group to continue operations with backup power.

The necessity of the automatic rescue device (ARD) in an elevator

Automatic Rescue Device (ARD) is one among the important safety equipment of passenger elevators. Elevators equipped with ARD system will help the elevator not to be stuck in case of sudden power failure when being used.

ARD is a very complex system that operates fully automatically and is activated when the power supply to the elevator is interrupted. At that time, backup power from the batteries will immediately be provided and help the elevator motor to continue its operation, bring the elevator cabin to the nearest floor and open the door for people inside to exit.

The total time from power outage to door opening is only approximately one minute. It is a very short time and will not be able to cause discomfort to users.

The ARD system operates on a battery backup source with sufficient capacity for about 4-5 rescue times and it is important to note that the backup power supply is only for rescue purposes; it is not enough to operate the elevator instead of the electrical grid.

Therefore, if users want to use the elevator as normal in case of a power outage, the only way is to equip with a generator. However, the generator serving the elevator must be a triple phase generator and have a relatively large capacity (depending on the capacity of elevator’s motor), which mgiht be very expensive. Therefore, installing a generator is not feasible for elevators in households.
